When it’s raining in Scotland and you haven’t booked anywhere to jet off to on your holidays, your dog is depressed from being permanently damp and you’ve forgotten what your knees look like because it’s been so long since you’ve worn shorts, there is only one thing to do...
Gather up the damp dog, the unworn shorts and anything else that vaguely reminds you of summer, dump the whole lot in the car and head down the M1.
Well, that’s what we did the other week and on arrival in Hertfordshire (after nine hours and one visit from the AA man) we were rewarded with blissful sunshine and temperatures that seemed almost tropical to us.
There’s no doubt that a holiday and clear, blue skies are good for the soul and it’s spurred us on to think about the future. So much, in fact, that we’ve even been writing out our five year plans.
Here’s mine -
Win the lottery and move to Harpenden.

Hi Alexis, I've been following your blog for a while now and absolutely love it! I found out about your book earlier this year and bought it right away (had to wait impatiently for two weeks while it was being shipped from the UK though). It was a page turner and an inspiration! It's not easy to stop shopping and start saving. So, thank you for sharing your story!
ReplyDeleteIts very similar to mine, although a nice boat is more favorable than Harpenden
ReplyDeleteThanks A for such a lovely comment. Are you a shopaholic or a reformed character? x
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, you have a good point there, but Harpenden doesn't make me sea-sick x
ReplyDeleteI'm a recovering shopaholic. I tried giving up shopping completely (like you did in the book), but couldn't last more than a week. I have to treat myself with SMALL things now and then. But I definitely don't spend anywhere as much money as I used to (I saw myself in you when I was reading the book - Chanel, hello!). I cut back in so many areas of my life, learned "to shop" in my own closet and set financial goals that inspire me to save every day. Hopefully I can see shopping as a "normal" activity and not as an obsession very soon!
